Aisling(6) Murroe(0)

Division 1 League - Thursday 27th May 2010

This game was played at a point in the season where teams are affected by exam pressures and this left both squads severely depleted for the encounter with each having the bare eleven. Annacotty were also suffering a midweek hangover after their game with the top ranked American team William and Mary only two nights previously. Nonetheless the game got off to a scrappy start with neither team making substantial ground. The deadlock was broken on the 20min mark when Sarah Stack won a ball in midfield played it to Danielle Sheehy who went on to leave three defenders in her wake to hit an unstoppable shot in the top left hand corner. Annacotty were slowly getting their rhythm with Laura Hughes laying siege to the Murroe goal from the right wing. Annacottys second goal was a terrific solo effort from Clodagh Dunworth who won the ball at the half way line and dribbled her way past the Murroe defence to record her 4th goal of the season.

The half time whistle was welcomed by both sides as their respective managers wanted to gather their teams in.

After a stern talk at half time Aisling Annacotty began going up the gears to eradicate a below par performance. They got their just rewards when they scored four goals in 15mins which ended the game as a contest. The third goal came from Fiona Maloney who beat the offside trap and coolly slotted the ball past the commendable Emily Cleary in the Murroe goal.

Maloney went on to the score the 4th goal when a clever pass from Shona Ryan split the defence and Maloney made no mistake in front of goal. Murroe were now trying to stem the Annacotty attack and brought the excellent Joan Ryan from centre back up to midfield. With tiring legs in the Annacotty team after their exploits midweek Sarah Crotty made a rare appearance in midfield and was rewarded with a stunning goal from 25yards out. Sheehy concluded the rout with another of her trade mark runs leaving the Murroe keeper with no chance.

The score at the end was a six nil win for the home team against a Murroe team with plenty of potential with the likes of young Amy Hickey being a great prospect for the future.
