Division 1 League - Tuesday 3rd August 2010

A night to remember for the twins

Following their defeat to Bohemians at the weekend, Shannon Hibs were quickly back into their league campaign with a difficult assignment against title chasing Lifford who needed a win to stay in the hunt for league honours. Hibs were missing several starters through injuries including captain Gill Purcell and Leanne Boyle and were up against it from the start. However, their defence stood firm with Rachel McGann and Kathy Whelan outstanding in the opening exchanges and the team grew more confident as the game went on. It was Lifford who took the lead after a half hour following a mix-up in the Hibs defence which resulted in an own goal. This didn’t unsettle Hibs who continued to push for their opening goal and following some good work from Edel Hogan, she found Claire Weherley who crossed into the box to Shaunagh O’Brien who volleyed home to level matters going into half-time. This was Shaunaghs first start for Hibs this season and for a young player, she showed no nerves when the opportunity came her way.

Both teams continued to press for the winner with chances at either end. Michelle Clancy who filled in as goalkeeper for Hibs was outstanding and commanded her area very well. The winner came mid-way through the 2nd half when Sinead Toomey broke through the Lifford defence, crossed to the awaiting Alana O’Brien who fired home to send Hibs 2-1 in front. Alana who was introduced shortly after half-time, was also making her league debut like her twin sister Shaunagh and it was a night to remember for both girls. Hibs finished their league campaign with their first ever win against Lifford in what was one of their best performances all season. Well done to all and a special mention to the twin sisters!
