On a glorious summers evening both Mungret Regional and Annacotty were raring to go. The whistle blew and AA’s Nicole Cronin broke through testing mungrets defence straight away with a powerful shot but it was well anticipated by mungret’s keeper Marissa Power. A switch in play then allowed mungret to show their attacking side as Ciara Cusack cleared the ball which was controlled by Samantha McCarthy who continued on to shoot but it was a near miss.
Mungret again attacking saw a shot by Ellen Ryan denied by the crossbar. AA then made their way back up the field, with Nicole Cronin challenging the mungret goal once again, but she was denied. Danielle sheehy made a break up the wing and served a pacing shot at the mungret keeper but once again it was saved, showing the consistency of Marissa Power.
With 17 minutes to go AA’s Vickey Reynolds struck home with a powerful strike of the ball leaving the home side one nil down. Mungret were holding up defensively but an unforeseen tackle by a mungret defender led to a penalty for AA and which Danielle Sheehy stood up to pot home. The score at the half time whistle was 2-0.
2nd half came and Mungret nettled on with some lovely passes being strung together by Mary Neill and Sinead Cusack. AA’s back four were appearing to be unbreakable until 15 minutes to go when Ciara Barrett made no mistake in scoring to make it 2-1 to AA. This gave Mungret a great boost but it wasn’t enough to overcome the pacey youthful AA team on the night, with the game ending at 2-1.
