Shannon Hibs A (0) Aisling Annacotty (2)

Division 1 League - Tuesday, 27th April 2010

The first match of the new season kicked off in windy and wet conditions in Ballycasey last night. Shannon Hibs opted to play with a strong breeze behind them in the first half and applied a lot pressure on the Aisling backline from the start with Kiara Hannon and Sinead Toomey doing well in the middle of the park. However, Aisling weathered the early pressure and started to get into the game with some good neat passing. Both defences were on top in the early exchanges but the first opportunity fell to Shannon Hibs when good work between Claire Weherley and Gill Purcell resulted in an opening but the opportunity was missed.

Aisling started to look more dangerous on the counter attack and a long ball over the top split the Shannon Hibs defence but Ursula McInerney stood up well to deny a goal scoring opportunity. Shannon Hibs kept pushing and finished the half much stronger and were unlucky not to take the lead when both Claire Weherley and Michelle Clancy were guilty of missing chances. The half finished 0-0.

Aisling started the brighter of the 2 in the second half and with the wind behind them, they applied the same pressure on the Shannon Hibs back 4 and looked the more likely to score. A long ball down the middle was not dealt with by the Shannon Hibs defence and following a quick pass, the Aisling centre forward was through on goal and didn’t waste the opportunity to put her side in the lead. Shannon Hibs lost Rachel McGann through injury and this was a massive blow as she was dominant all game alongside her partner Aine Ni Cormaic. Jenny Hall was introduced and wasted no time in setting up an attack with a through ball to Claire Weherley who played it into Gill Purcell but unfortunately, she was crowded out by the defenders. Shannon Hibs pressed for the equaliser and as a result began to lose a little shape leaving space in behind. Aisling took advantage of this and following some nice quick passes, another through ball resulted in a one on one which the Aisling Annacotty forward scored with a delicate chip over Ursula McInerney in the Shannon Hibs goal.

The game finished 2-0 but a credit to both teams in difficult conditions.

Best for Shannon Hibs were Ursula McInerney, Rachel McGann and Kathy Whelan.
