Lifford took all 3 points in a very entertaining Division 1 game played in Ballycasey on Tuesday 22nd June.
Lifford dominated the opening quarter with some impressive football and never gave Hibs a chance to
get settled into the match. However, after weathering the early storm, Hibs settled and could have taken
the lead following a great cross across the face of the goal by Michelle Clancy that Gill Purcell
just sent over the bar. The game became more even with both defences dominating. With 35 minutes gone, a
clearance from Kathy Whelan struck a Lifford player and deflected to Irene Hehir who slotted home
to give Lifford a 1-0 lead going into half-time.
Shannon Hibs started the 2nd half much better and were a constant threat on the counter attack with
Leanne Boyle and Kiara Hannon getting more involved on the wings. However,
Lifford got the important second goal from a penalty after Irene Hehir was fouled inside the box.
Sonya Maher stepped up and slotted the ball home. Shannon Hibs adopted a more attacking formation
and introduced Claire Weherley and Barbara Nzvara on the hour. While pushing to get back into the game,
Hibs left themselves exposed at the back and were punished by Lifford who got their 3rd goal
following some neat passing. Shannon Hibs kept pushing and following some great work from Kiara Hannon,
she was fouled in the box to give Michelle Clancy an opportunity to get her team on the scoreboard.
She scored with ten minutes to go leaving the score at 3-1 and this is how the game finished.
