Shannon Hibs recorded their first win of the league campaign with a well deserved victory against Murroe played in ideal conditions in
Ballycasey, Shannon on Tuesday evening. Hibs, coming from a heavy defeat against Listowel the week before were clearly anxious to
improve on their performance and started the much brighter of the 2 teams.
Hibs began to dominate the midfield and created chances for the front pair of Gill Purcell and Claire Weherley whose
efforts were well saved by the Murroe goalkeeper. The pressure was mounting on the Murroe back-line and after
some great work by Leanne Boyle on the left wing, her pass was met by Gill Purcell who was fouled in the box resulting in
a penalty for Hibs. Michelle Clancy stepped up but put her effort just wide of the left post.
Hibs continued to push forward in numbers but Murroe started to counter attack with a bit more quality and after some
clever work by Claire Coughlan, her through ball was met by Susan O’Brien but produced a good save from Ursula McInerney in the Hibs goal.
It was a warning of how dangerous Murroe could break at pace. The breakthrough came on the stroke of half-time when Leanne Boyle
won a corner for Hibs which was taken by Kiara Hannon. Gill Purcell rose highest and directed a header into the roof of
the Murroe net to put the home team 1-0 going in at the interval.
The 2nd half started with both teams being very cautious with Murroe getting on top in the early exchanges, pushing
for an equaliser, however, the Hibs defence of Aíne McCormaic, Edel Hogan, Avril Clancy and Kathy Whelan stood firm.
Following a corner for Shannon Hibs that was cleared by the Murroe defence, Joan Ryan put Susan O’Brien clear of the Hibs defence.
Kathy Whelan did her best to get close her but mis-timed her tackle in the box resulting in a penalty.
Susan O’Brien took her chance well and scored to level the tie at 1-1 with 30 minutes remaining.
Shannon Hibs introduced Mimi Flynn and Rachel Ryan at this stage to add some fresh legs to a very entertaining game.
Shannon Hibs scored a deserved winner through Kiara Hannon. Following some good work from Aisling Hughes,
Hannon collected the ball on the edge of the box and fired a shot past the Murroe keeper to win it for Shannon Hibs with
10 minutes left to give the Shannon side their first win of the season.
