Bilboa LFC made the trip to Ballylanders for a league game on Tuesday evening, 25th May 2010, where they came up against a good, hard working Ballylanders team. Played in near perfect conditions at the foot of the Galtee's this was a really hard fought game.
Bilboa started the better of the two teams and had all the early possession without ever testing the goalkeeper. In the 8th minute Ballylanders had their first prominent attack when a long balled played up the field Bilboa failed to clear and ball fell at the feet of the Ballylanders striker who brilliantly finished to the net giving Collette O' Toole no chance in goal. Bilboa did not let the heads drop after this set back and were soon back up the other end applying all the pressure. In the 15 minute good work from Sheila McAteer on the left wing set up Sheila Sheehy who shot from 20 yards but flew straight at the goalkeeper. In the 24 minute Bilboa won a corner after good pressure from Niamh Berkery, Ann Marie Leahy swung in a great ball that Elaine Berkery got on the end of but blazed over. Bilboa were applying all the pressure at this stage but were always vulnerable to the counter attack from the very pacey Ballylanders attack and in the 37 minute Bilboa scrambled the ball away for a throw, from the resulting throw Bilboa won the ball back but a mix up in the defence let Ballylanders get a shot in that flew into the top corner, two mistakes, 2 nil down. It was clear to see that this setback effected the girls and but for some brilliant goalkeeping from Collette O’ Toole who on two occasions really saved Bilboa from the game being over a half time. At half time Ballylanders 2 – Bilboa 0.
The second half set about much the same as the first with Bilboa having all the possession and territory, their seemed to be a little more fight in the girls at this stage, they were applying a lot of pressure to Ballylanders when they were on the ball and as a result they began to make mistakes. Bilboa brought on Breda Doheny for Elaine Berkery and from her first touch she ran at the defence causing all sorts of trouble resulting in a corner. Bilboa got right back into the game on the hour mark when Ann Marie Leahy broke out of defence and played a great ball up to Sheila McAteer, the keeper advanced but misjudged the bounce and the ball rolled into the net. At this stage it was all Bilboa, but for some great goalkeeping and some stout defending Bilboa just couldn't get the equalizer, try as they might. In the end it finished 2-1 to Ballylanders. Disappointment in the end for Bilboa, who were a shade unlucky to loose.
