Bilboa LFC entertained Celtic A in the league on Thursday night, in a re-match of last years Divisional Cup Final, another tight and close encounter was expected. Bilboa showed a number of positional changes to try and revert a poor string of results lately and settled quickly and dominated the early exchanges. Ann Marie Leahy playing in midfield was pulling the strings with her passing and was opening up the Celtic A defence time and again. It was only a matter of time before Bilboa made their early pressure count, and Ann Marie Leahy opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Sheila McAteer passed to her in the box and her first time shot squeezed passed the keeper at the near post. At this it was all Bilboa and playing the style of football that has not being seen all season they were really on top of their opponents. They very nearly made it two nil on the half hour mark, when Ann Marie Leahy swung in a corner, it was met first time on the volley by Mary Leahy but it was some how tipped away by the Celtic keeper. The second came soon after when Amy Ryan who was rock solid at the back found Helen Kennedy who played Sheila Sheehy in on left wing, Sheila cut in and brilliant finished to the corner of the net from 18 yards to make it comfortably for Bilboa. At half time it read Bilboa 2 Celtic A 0.
The second half started a little slower than the first but that was to be expected with the really warm weather. Celtic A we really battling hard at this stage and were putting a lot of pressure on the Bilboa midfield. The game was swinging from end to end without any real cut chances. Bilboa came closest to extended their lead when Helen Kennedy again played Sheila Sheehy through but her first time shot was expertly tipped over the bar. Celtic A were eventually beginning to get some pressure on the Bilboa goals and Collette O’ Toole was called upon to make a great save from a free kick that was powerfully struck from the edge of the box. From the kick out Bilboa went up the field and wrapped the game, with Celtic pushing to get back in the game they allowed gaps at the back allowing Sheila Sheehy to race through and to bag her second of the evening. In the end it finished three nil to Bilboa a very good result and a great performance by the girls that sets them up for the remainder of the season.
