Bilboa(1) Ballylanders(0)

Division 2A League - Tuesday 20th July 2010

Bilboa LFC played Ballylanders in Bilboa on Tuesday night in a league game. This was second verses third so a close encounter was expected and that is exactly what we got.

The first half started with both teams sounding each other with out any meaningful goal mouth action, slowly Bilboa started to dominate in midfield and Breda Doheny and Helen Kennedy started to drive at the away defence putting Ballylanders under all sorts of pressure. With all this pressure it seemed only a matter of time before a goal would come and in the 26th minute we taught we had taken the lead when after a series of corners a delivery from the right by Ann Marie Leahy was brilliantly headed home by Breda Doheny but was ruled out for a dubious off side decision, time and again Bilboa threatened and really should have had a comfortable advantage but some good goalkeeping by the Ballylanders keeper and poor finishing on our part it remained 0-0. The break through finally came in the 43rd minute when an exchange of passes by Sheila Sheehy and Sheila McAteer on the edge of the box got Sheila McAteer through one on one and she made no mistake from 8 yards. Bilboa relaxed after this and were very nearly meant to pay when in the 46th minute Ballylanders attacked with pace and got in one on one but Collette O’ Toole raced from the Bilboa goal and made a great block. Half time ended 1-0.

The second half took off as the first finished with Bilboa doing all the pressing, and should have increased their lead, when in 57th minute a long high ball from Ann Marie Leahy was misjudged by the defence and Sheila McAteer raced through but her first time shot just missed the target. To Ballylanders credit they reacted to Bilboa's dominance and made 3 substitutions and some positional changes and they came more and more into the game, all night long Amy Ryan and indeed the entire Bilboa defence were well on top of the pacy Ballylanders attack but suddenly with more pressure coming from midfield we began to look a little ragged at the back. It was time to dig in at this stage and with some great tackling and blocking by Amy Ryan and Helen Kennedy Bilboa were not going to be denied, but in the last minute a great through ball got Ballylanders in one on one again but great reactions by Collette O’ Toole in goals denied Ballylanders the equaliser and Bilboa held on for the win. All in all a very good performance and important win by Bilboa especially after the heavy defeat suffered last week to Kilmallock. Well done girls.
