Kilmallock(5) Bilboa(1)

Division 2A League - Thursday 15th July 2010

This was a very entertaining game in spite of the heavy rain that fell all through the game. The hoops got off to a flier when Marie Curtin released Jenny Clery down the left flank and Jenny's fiercely struck shot was too strong for the home keeper who couldn't prevent it from finding the bottom corner. On 15 minutes Jenny got her second when she latched onto a loose ball in the box to rifle home. The home team came more into the game as the half progressed and were unlucky not to pull a goal back on the half hour mark when a powerful freekick was parried into the path of the centreforward who fired narrowly over.

The game was effectively killed off in a blistering five minute spell before the break when the hoops got two quickfire goals. The first came when Anna O'Dea found Marie Curtin with an astute pass and Marie sent a rocket of a shot into the top corner. Shortly after Sinead O'Riordan and Claudia Hudner combined to set the pacy Becky Hand through on goal and she finished with aplomb to the bottom corner.

The second half was a more even affair with both defences on top for long periods. Bilboa pulled a goal back following an impressive move and the goalscoring was wrapped up when Audrey Bradford got on the end of a flowing move to bundle the ball home from close range.

On Thursday night Bilboa entertained Kilmallock in a league game played in atrocious conditions in which both teams did really well to play a really entertaining game. Kilmallock are the run away league leaders so Bilboa were well aware of the task that faced them. The game started off fairly even with both teams taking a while to adjust to the really wet conditions. Kilmallock started to get there short passing game going and made life really hard for Bilboa as we were doing a lot of work chasing our opponents down but the never say die attitude of Sheila Sheehy, Aoife Ryan and Ann Marie Leahy meant it was not all one way traffic. The pressure did finally pay off when after a Bilboa attack Kilmallock counter attacked at unbelievable pace down the left when the Kilmallock centre forward cut in and unleashed a ferrious shot that found its way into the bottom corner. This was a set back to Bilboa and we were soon two down when a Kilmallock midfielder received the ball 30 yards from goal and struck an unbelievable effort into the top corner. At two nil down Bilboa did not give up to their credit and really should of pulled a goal back when a ferrious free kick by Amy Ryan was spilled by the keeper but some how from a yard out the rebound was hit over the bar. Up the other end the Kilmallock forwards who are very quick were causing all sorts of trouble and soon went three up when the ball was not cleared and it was duly put a way. The game was getting away from us at this stage but again we were getting chances when the keeper spilled the slippy ball and Sheila Sheehy was unlucky to just miss the target. Kilmallock made it four nil just on half time to put the game to bed when a cross from the left was put away at the back post.

To Bilboa’s credit the second half was a lot closer affair, the girls really dug in and kept going to try and get back into the game, we pulled a goal back in the 48th minute when Ann Marie Leahy intercepted a Kilmallock pass and expertly finished to the corner of the net. All over the field Bilboa were working their socks off and putting Kilmallock under all sorts of pressure and could have pulled second back when Sheila Sheehy race through to be one on one with the keeper but her effort just missed. With Bilboa pushing forward Kilmallock almost snatched a 5th when their centre forward broke through the centre of the Bilboa defence but Collette O’ Toole stood tall and made a good save but Kilmallock soon got the 5th to seal their win when a cross from the right was met first time and coolly put away.
