A night to remember for the twins
Shannon Hibs and Bohemians FC played out a hugely entertaining FAI ¼ final tie in Shannon on Saturday 31st July. The game was played in excellent conditions with a huge turnout supporting their local team who were striving to reach the semi-finals for their 2nd time in 3 years. Bohemians showed their quality early on as they settled into the game much faster than Hibs passing the ball around confidently. Hibs began to compete more and following a nervy opening quarter, they settled to the task. However, a mis-timed tackle on the edge of the Hibs box proved costly as Bohemians took the lead against the run of play with a good strike from the resulting free-kick. This seemed to spring Hibs into life and following some neat passing from Leanne Boyle, Michelle Clancy crossed into the box to the awaiting Gill Purcell who fired home from close range to send the sides into the interval 1-1. The second half was an even contest with both sides pushing for the all important 3rd goal. It was Hibs who took the lead following a great run from Kiara Hannon who passed to Michelle Clancy whose shot beat the Bohs keeper to make the score 2-1 after 60 minutes. Hibs became more defensive and sat back a little inviting pressure from Bohemians who introduced some fresh players to search for the equaliser. It was late on when a through ball gave Bohemians the chance to level and their forward shot past Ursula McInerney in the Hibs goal to send the match into extra-time. With the game nearing the dreaded penalty shoot-out, a long ball out of the Bohs defence caused problems for the Hibs back line and the Bohemians forward struck home in the last minute to send her team through to the semi-finals. It was tough on the Shannon Hibs side who were outstanding throughout the game and pushed their opponents all the way.
