This was a terrific game played at the superb Desmond League ground at Clonreask, Askeaton between Division 1 Runner`s up Aisling Annacotty and 3rd placed Murroe.

Contests between both teams have been closely fought all year and this was to be no different. Aisling thought they had got off to a dream start when Fiona Moloney found the net only to be ruled offside. However she was not to be denied with her strong direct running style and lightning reflexes keeping the Murroe defence busy throughout the match. Before half time, Fiona had blitzed Murroe with 2 goals. Murroe had very much equal balance of the first half exchanges and were unlucky to be going in at half time 2 goals in arrears.

Aisling started the second half in more confident mood. In an excellent move down the left wing Catherine Cronin passed for Clodagh Dunworth to hammer home the 3rd goal. The fourth goal came after strong run from Fiona Moloney hit the cross bar and the ever vigilant Laura Hughes was on hand to head in the rebound. Despite an enormous mountain to climb, the Murroe ladies dug deep and upped their intensity in the last 20 minutes. Joan Curtin, Aine Cummins and Natalie Brommell were to the forefront in the comeback. From a free kick outside the box, Trish Butler smashed a superb drive against the angle of the crossbar for Susan O Brien to convert home the rebound. A subsequent penalty was calmly slotted to the net by Trish Butler.

Murroe finished the much stronger team hoping to force a 3rd and set up an intriguing finale. However Aisling held out to record their first cup success of the season on a 4-2 scoreline. For Aisling, Jessie O Donnell, Sarah Stack and Fiona Moloney were industrious and committed throughout the game.

Both sides meet again in the Umbro Ladies League Open Cup Final this week. Limerick League Chairman Trevor Lyttle commended both teams for the top quality and standard of football on display and also paid tribute to the management teams of both sides.
