Convincing win for Mungret in National Intermediate Cup

Mungret 4 Abbeyfeale 1

Mungret booked there place in round 2 of the FAI Umbro Women's Intermediate National Cup with a convincing win over Abbeyfeale, the current FAI National Junior & Desmond League Champions The game was played on a fine day in the Cement pitch in Mungret.

Mungret started bightly with the first attack with Ellen Butler recieving a long ball from Jenni Lyttle on the left from the tip off but the end result was a goal kick. Abbeyfeale took the lead with a soft goal which should have been dealt with by the Mungret defence. Mungret responded striaght away and nearly got a response but Ciara Nolans shot went wide. Mungret pushed hard again and got the equaliser through Sinead Cusask who came in off the right to score with a looping left foot shot. Again Mungret pushed hard, working hard from the heart of the defence up through the whole team. From an Abbeyfeale kick out Jenni Lyttle won possession and played a perfect through ball to the left side of the box for Ellen Butler to run on to and hit an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. This gave Mungret a 2-1 lead and maintained this advantage through to half time.

The second half started with Abbeyfeale putting pressure on the Mungret goal, but the defence was equal to it. From Abbeyfeale attacks Mungret were breaking quickly down the wings with the tireless Sinead Cusask and Ellen Butler puttting pressure on the Abbeyfeale defence. Mungret extended the lead after winning a corner on the right which Ellen Bulter took and the inswinging ball was deflected into their own goal by an Abbeyfeale player to give Mungret a 3-1 lead. Abbeyfeale didnt give up and had an open goal at their mercy but Jenni Lyttle cleared the ball before it had a chance to cross the line. Mungret made a change by bringing on fresh legs up front with Donna Fitzgerald replacing Ciara Nolan. Ellen Butler again breaking down the left made sure of the win by beating her player and firing a shot past the Abbeyfeale keeper. Mungrets left full Ciara Barrett was replaced by Neisha Aherne as she suffered a nasty ankle injury. Mungret saw out the game and never sat back to let Abbeyfeale back into the game.
